Photo Gallery: 2016 Seattle Youth Poet Laureate Reading

On Saturday, May 28, friends and family gathered at the Northwest Folklife Festival for the crowning of the 2016-17 Seattle Youth Poet Laureate. A joint program of Seattle Arts & Lectures and Urban Word NYC, the Seattle Youth Poet Laureate program celebrates local teen poets, activist and community builders to highlight the unique role that young artists play in envisioning a better, brighter future for us all.

Program co-founders and WITS Writers Matt Gano and Aaron Counts welcomed the eight poet finalists who presented powerful original poetry exploring the intersections of identity, community and collective action. The winner, Angel Gardner, will receive a book deal, mentorship by esteemed published poets, and platforms to share her courageous voice at events across Seattle. Leija Farr, the 2015 Youth Poet Laureate, celebrated the end of her reign with a reading from her newly released book of poetry, Outweigh The Gravity.
